Job Description

When you are searching for a job you read the job description right?   You know you qualify for the job.  You send in your resume and cover letter and wait. Wait some more; and you get the “rejection email.”  Maybe you ask yourself the question, “Why” “What’s wrong with me?”   The reason you’re not getting that elusive interview is because your resume doesn’t reflect the skill set of the job description.

I recommend as a Professional Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor at the Masters Level that you take your resume compare it to the job description, then compare the two.  Once you have finished you will want to revise your resume to match it.

Discrimination continues to be alive and well in America, what a very sad commentary. Although this article doesn’t directly apply to with disabilities, it’s an “eye opener”  of what is going in the hiring practices of employers.

The OFCCP is clearly beginning to monitor the hiring practices of those companies who have federal contracts (doing business with the federal government)

Top Reasons to Keep Job Searching During the Holidays

  1. Employers are hiring: Don’t think for a minute that employers aren’t hiring.  Check the job boards and you will thousands of available jobs that employers need to fill.  Be sure to check the leading job sites regularly so you don’t miss out on job leads.
  2. Less Competition for available jobs: Even thought you might really need a new job it can be hard to manage a job search when there are so many other things happening during the holidays.  For some people, it’s easier to focus on the season not the job hunt.  That’s fine, of course, but if you are a juggler who can multi-task you’ll find less competition for jobs. That could be a chance for an interview that you may not have got during another time of year because the candidate pool was more competitive.  Keeping your job search organized will help you manage multiple priorities.
  3. More Networking Opportunities:  You couldn’t pick a better time of the year for networking. There are many social and business holiday functions during November and December when you can connect with people who can help your job search.  Not sure how to do it? Here are some tips for holiday networking when you’re job searching:  Don’t be shy.  Most people are thrilled to have the opportunity to pay it forward by helping you out – especially during the holiday of giving.  Consider getting a business card made with your contact information and the URL of your LinkedInpage, if you have one.  Bring a supply with you to give to the people you meet at networking events and holiday parties.  Have an elevator pitch ready so you can quickly share information on your background.
  4. Salary and Benefits in place for the New Year:  It’s always good to start January with your life in order, if you can.  Having your compensation set for the year not only helps pay the bills, it also helps with budgeting and tax planning.  
  5. A Temporary Job could become permanent:  If you are hired for a temporary holiday season job, you could get to keep it.  Companies typically keep some of the tem[s they hire for the holiday, and you could be one of thme if you make a good impression on your employer.  Companies typically keep some of the temps they hire.
  6. You may be able to negotiate a start date:  Start dates can be negotiable.  Two weeks is typical if you are giving notice to your current employer.  You may be able to extend that out to a later date, especially if there are Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays when the business is closed.  That would give you a bit of extra time to move a start date back.

Hidden Rules in the Workplace

You get hired and go to the orientation where you receive the Employee Handbook.  You get all the rules, policy and procedures-it has all of the information you will need to be successful on your job. Right?  At your orientation, HR doesn’t mention all the stuff that can’t be written down-hidden rules.

Hidden rules is the information that isn’t written down, but you are expected to know. They are cues that let you know whether you belong to a group or whether you don’t. Break the rule and no one may tell you what you did wrong.

To understand the hidden rules in your workplace, it will be important to observe and listen to your co-workers and to watch how they behave.
